Understanding Surface Finishes in Sand Castings

What to Expect from Sand Casting

Our Metal Cast plaques are hand-crafted using high-quality oil-bonded sand casting. This process produces durable, beautiful pieces, but because it uses sand molds, the surface will have:

• A natural textured finish (fine sand grain pattern)
• Occasional small sand inclusions or pits (typically less than 1 mm)
• Minor colour and texture variations common to bronze castings

These characteristics are normal and do not affect the strength or longevity of your piece.

Standard Finish Level (Included)

• Cleaned to remove loose sand
• Light brushing and blow-off
• Minimal grinding of sharp edges or obvious burrs

This finish preserves the natural character of the sand cast surface.

Upgrade Options (For a Smoother Finish)

• Satin Finish - Extra sanding, grinding, and smoothing
• Premium polished Finish - Polishing and minor filling of inclusions

Upgraded finishes reduce surface texture and minimize visible imperfections for a more refined look.

What Is Considered Acceptable?

Acceptable Features

• Small pits or inclusions < 1 mm diameter
• Natural sand texture pattern.
• Minor surface roughness in non-critical areas

Non-Acceptable Features

• Large voids or holes
• Unreadable text
• Sharp burrs or protrusions affecting detail

Why These Surface Features Exist

Sand casting uses specially prepared molds made from bonded sand, which results in a textured, organic surface. Even with meticulous preparation, tiny sand grains may leave slight marks or inclusions. This is a hallmark of the craft, not a flaw.
