What Size House Sign Should I Choose?

What Size House Sign Should I Choose?

Choosing the right size for a house sign can make a big difference to how it looks once it is fitted. A sign that is too small can get lost on a large wall, while one that is too large can overwhelm the entrance.

The best size depends on a few simple things: how much text is on the sign, how far away it needs to be read from, and where it will be installed.

Small House Signs

For simple house numbers or short property names, a smaller sign is often all you need.

As a general guide, signs around 150mm to 250mm wide work well for:

  • House numbers
  • Short house names
  • Front doors
  • Gate posts
  • Small entrance walls

These sizes are ideal where the sign will mainly be viewed from close range.

Medium House Signs

For most residential properties, a medium-sized sign is usually the most versatile option.

Signs around 250mm to 400mm wide are suitable for:

  • House names
  • Two-line designs
  • House names with a number
  • Signs with a simple motif or border
  • Larger entrance walls

This size range gives enough room for the lettering to remain clear without the plaque feeling oversized.

For many of the house signs we manufacture, this is the size range we recommend most often.

Large House Signs

Larger signs are ideal when the property is set back from the road or the sign needs to be visible from a greater distance.

Signs 400mm wide and above can work particularly well for:

  • Long property names
  • Large driveways
  • Country homes
  • Entrance pillars
  • Larger boundary walls
  • Signs that need to be visible from passing vehicles

Larger signs also allow more room for decorative elements such as crests, motifs, borders or multiple lines of text.

Consider the Viewing Distance

One of the most important factors is how far away the sign will be viewed from.

A plaque mounted beside a front door can be relatively small because visitors will see it from only a few metres away.

A sign positioned at the entrance to a driveway may need to be considerably larger, particularly if you want the property name to be readable from the road.

As the viewing distance increases, the lettering normally needs to increase in size too.

Think About How Much Text You Need

The amount of wording also affects the overall size of the sign.

A simple sign such as:

27

or

OAK HOUSE

can usually be kept quite compact.

However, a design containing a house name, number, road name and decorative motif will generally benefit from a larger plaque.

Trying to fit too much text onto a small sign can make the lettering feel cramped and reduce readability.

Match the Sign to the Property

It is also worth considering the scale of the building itself.

A small plaque may look perfect beside a cottage doorway, while the same sign could look lost on a large Georgian property or substantial stone entrance wall.

Likewise, a very large plaque can appear overpowering on a smaller home.

Where possible, try to choose a size that feels in proportion with the area where the sign will be mounted.

Our Typical Recommendation

For most residential house signs, we find that a width of around 250mm to 400mm gives a good balance between visibility, readability and appearance.

There is no single correct size, though. Every property is different.

If you are unsure, simply send us a photograph of the area where the sign will be installed. We can recommend a suitable size and layout before your sign is made.
